Umpires Two umpires have control of the game and make the on-court decisions about the run of play. Starting play Play is started with a pass from the centre circle — this is called the centre pass.

Held Ball Once the ball has been caught, the player must pass it or shoot for goal within three seconds. Offside Each player is allowed in only a certain area of the court. Footwork Stepping Once a player has landed with the ball, the first landed foot is called the grounded foot and must either stay on the ground or in the air until the ball is passed on.

Obstruction When a player is defending another player or trying to intercept the ball they must be at least 0. Contact A player is not allowed to physically contact an opponent if it disrupts or stops that person from playing.

Sanctions For contact, obstruction or moving the goalpost penalties, the offending player must stand beside or away from the thrower and where the umpire has indicated. Throw in When the ball goes out of court, the umpire takes note of which team touched it last. With thanks to our partners.

Provided a defender does not also leave the court, contact or obstruct that player, they may attempt to stop them from re-entering the court. A player who has left the court may not defend another player whether they are on or off the court. A player who has left the court to retrieve the ball or take a throw-in must be allowed to re-enter the court where they left it or took the throw-in from. Foul Play is anything a player does within the field of play that is contrary to the letter and spirit of the Rules of the Game.

This includes dangerous play, unfair play, and dissent with the umpire. An umpire will decide what level of sanction is required from within the Game Management spectrum of sanctions, Cautions, Warnings or Suspensions. Our leagues run anything from week seasons throughout the year depending on how many teams are in your league.

After a season is finished we go into a new season straight away. Pre-game protocol A netball team consists of 7 players in different positions. All positions have designated areas on court as below: GS — allowed in their attacking goal third and shooting circle GA — allowed in the centre third, attacking goal third and the shooting circle WA — allowed in the centre third and attacking goal third, but not the shooting circle C — allowed in all thirds but neither shooting circle WD — allowed in the centre third and defensive goal third, but not the shooting circle GD — allowed in the centre third, defensive goal third and the shooting circle GK — allowed in their defensive goal third and shooting circle Games are played in 4 equal quarters of 8 minutes with a 1 min break between each quarter.

Sanctions and advantage There are 2 types of sanction in netball: Free pass — When a rule is broken that does not directly affect another player eg footwork. The player taking either type of sanction must still obey all netball rules. Start of play The controlling umpire will blow their whistle for the start of play when the attacking C is in possession of the ball and with at least one foot wholly within the centre circle.

Sanction — Free pass where the incorrectly positioned player was The centre pass must be caught within the centre third. Sanction — Throw-in awarded to the team who did not touch the ball on court last A Throw-in is set where the umpire indicates. The ball must pass through the ring from above, and must have passed through the ring before time ends for the goal to count Sanction — A free pass to the opposing team outside the circle If the ball passes through the ring after being deflected by a defender, then the goal will stand.

Offside A player is deemed offside if any part of their body makes contact with the ground in an area that they are not allowed to enter.

Sanction — Free pass to the opposing team where the player went offside Footwork A player may not re-ground their landing foot whilst in possession of the ball.

Sanction — Free pass to the opposing team where the player caught the ball Held Ball Once gaining possession of a ball a player must release the ball within 3 seconds Sanction — Free pass to the opposing team where the player caught the ball Playing the ball A player may gain possession of the ball by catching the ball either from another player or rebounding of the goalpost or rolling the ball to oneself.

Sanction — Free pass to the opposing team where the player caught the ball Over a Third The ball must be caught or touched by a player in each third of the court. Sanction — Free pass to the opposing team by the transverse line in the third where the ball entered incorrectly Obstruction — Of a player with the ball An opposing player may not attempt to defend a player in possession of the ball if they are within 3 feet of the landing foot of the player with the ball.

Sanction — Penalty Pass where the infringer was stood An opposing player who is the correct distance from the player in possession of the ball may attempt to defend the ball by jumping upwards, provided that if they land closer than 3 feet they do not interfere with the shooting or passing action. Obstruction — Of a player without the ball A player who is within 3 feet of an opponent, whether attacking or defending, may not use movements that take the arms away from the body so as to limit the possible movements of an opponent.

Sanction — Penalty Pass where the infringer was stood Contact Netball is no longer considered a non-contact sport. Sanction — Penalty Pass where the infringement took place Leaving the court A player may choose to leave the court to reposition themselves. Sanction — Penalty Pass on court where infringer was stood A player who has left the court may not defend another player whether they are on or off the court.

Sanction — Penalty Pass on court next to where infringer was stood off court A player who has left the court to retrieve the ball or take a throw-in must be allowed to re-enter the court where they left it or took the throw-in from.

Foul Play Foul Play is anything a player does within the field of play that is contrary to the letter and spirit of the Rules of the Game. In certain situations teams at or near the bottom of the standings may not advance to the playoffs. In the event that the match is drawn in a play-off or final the game will be decided by next score wins.

Which team starts with the centre pass will be decided by a coin flip. The game will continue until a goal is scored. In cases where several cancellations have occurred during the season, teams may be required to play on a different night of the week. Example: Thursday semi-finals may be played on Thursday and finals held on Friday. In this situation we will always try and get some sort of game going for the remainder of the time. Any questions regarding policies, rules, or eligibility must be addressed before the start of the match.

Games must start exactly at the designated start time. Teams that arrive late will be penalised by a goal a minute against them until they have the required amount of players to legally play. Lateness will also result in shorter netball games for both teams. We hope that all participants keep that in mind when becoming involved. Although the games may become intense, you still can be competitive while maintaining good sportsmanship. If you have questions regarding schedules, policies, rule interpretations, directions to the bar, etc.

When on court playing the three men have to be in separate thirds of the court, position wise. Play your part, have fun, enjoy yourselves and observe the GO Mammoth social code of conduct for players at all times.

Here are the main changes. The player taking the throw in must have at least one foot within 15cm 6 inches of the line. Previously the player must have placed one or both feet immediately behind the line.

A defender may not deflect a shot at goal on its downward path towards the ring this includes touching the ball up through the net. The Centre must have at least one foot wholly within the centre circle before the pass is taken. This rule has been relaxed slightly as previously the Centre would have been penalised if any part of their foot was on the ground outside of the centre circle as the pass was being played.

Once a player taking a penalty pass is in the correct position, the player may choose to either play the ball immediately or wait for the infringer to stand out of play. Previously the player taking a penalty pass had to wait until the infringer was standing out of play.

When a player passes the ball there must be sufficient space for an opposing player on the court to be able to intercept the ball as it moves from the hands of the thrower to the hands of the receiver. Delaying play either accidentally or deliberately is considered foul play — in some cases it could affect the outcome of the match.
