Joined May 25, Messages Me and my husband will be starting on our garage in a few months and had the idea of building a shower.
The garage is going to have block wall, we we going to just put it up in a corner anf put up another The question is, do you need to put a sealer between the tile and concrete block, I know that it will draw moisture, but would the tiles with a good sealer on top of them be enough?? Depending on other issues, it may be prudent to treat the wall prior to tiling. Issues such as climate moisture drive , location of wall below grade or above , any structural issues cracking, etc.
For a basic generic CMU wall? Decorative tile on a dry wall? If the CMU is in fine shape, no issues, cracks, no hydrostatic from behind, yes you can tile directly on it. It may be easier to skim coat the wall first to make the surface uniform and flat.
Then tile over the skim coat. If it's a wet wall, a shower, etc, then use a waterproof membrane before tiling to prevent the CMU from absorbing moisture generated within the wet space. Again, probably best to skim coat the wall first. Then apply the waterproof membrane over the cured skim coat. Then tile over the cured membrane. Porcelain sheets - Laminam - Accent walls.

Would you recommend using Schluter edges at the outside corners?
What is your recommendation? Thank you. Using a metal profile at the outside corners of the CMU wall is one way of doing it. Although a more professional way is to do a quirk miter at those transitions. Your email address will not be published. Great point about the lead Isaac to test for if I do remove the paint off the cinder block walls. They are very flat and the grinder will get any mortar spots that are high.
Rick using a primer sounds like a good idea, this paint has a great bond. Unlike the floor which I will remove the paint because it is flaking off. I just want to have everything covered in my estimate as to what has to be done. I will just put in for the labor for removing the paint or most of it off the walls to the thinset is mechanically bonded.
If TEC will back up going over this with a primer and their thinset What do they give you in the case of a failure couple years later The usual guarantee from a manufacture not really cost to redo it just the cost of their materials.
I will put in the estimate to have the paint removed and tested for lead. I don't want to bring the wall out any with lathe or cbu because I am not doing the whole wall just 48" high.
I will use rondec to cap it off. You can kerdi board the whole wall, whatever you are not tiling you could skim coated with joint compound, prime and paint. With the kerdi option you will have new walls and warranty. I don't really have the space to build out the walls and structurally is just isn't necessary. All that plumbing fixtures have to go back in and putting k-board in would just create more work. If this was a big shower that would be different.
The cinderblock is flat to tile onto no need to put anything over it to accept the tile. Just need to either sand down the paint or prime over it like Rick said it that is a valid option in this case. From Laticrete Before I entered the tile world, my Dad tiled the basement shower in their house going right over painted cinder blocks.
