Possum can you eat

I've heard of folks eating them when times were tough but does anybody out there actually enjoy eating them? I personally don't want to touch them without gloves on let alone eat one.. Just curious.. Tags: None. I remember reading somewhere that if they are not fed persimmons, the meat tastes gamey, so they must be considered edible in some parts of the country.

Comment Post Cancel. Pursuant to what 99explorer said, I used to hear that folks would catch them alive in the summer and feed them peaches.

They said you've never had anything as good as a peach-fed possum. Just like armadillos, I haven't ever gotten hungry or curious enough to get past the original packagingthey are just too nasty looking to clean. I know some old boys that Eat Raccoon but pass up on Opossum, yet will trap bore hogs and feed them corn to clean them out.

My grandad said they ate it when he was young, personally there would have to be nothing but, skunks, dillos, and possums left before I would. I've ate possum, coon and dillos. Dillos are by far the best tasting small wildlife I've tasted. If you've ate at the local mexican or hot wok, you've ate possum!

Jere Smith. Never been THAT hungry! Have heard old timers talk about eating possum, among other things. I know that when we trapped as youngsters, once the coons we caught were skinned out, we'd sell them.

You had to leave the paws on, otherwise the buyers would pass, thinking you were trying to sell them a cat Or are you saying that they are just adding it in with all the other mystery meat dog, cat, etc. Is someone there on roadkill detail???? Over 40 years ago, I worked in a quarry during my summers. A worker we called "Possum Belly" would take any fresh road killed possum other workers gave him with a smile.

I never have eaten one, but I don't see why someone couldn't. I probably would prefer an animal that doesn't eat the garbage I throw out, but I don't see why a cleaner-fed possum couldn't taste good.

Possums like to stay in the trees, and you're much more likely to catch something else. Hey, Ed! There's something in the trap! See them bushes moving? Let's see what it is! Another thing you might want to take into consideration is that possums are scavengers.

They eat anything. If a possum is in the road, chances are he's there looking for lunch. Therefore, it's best to catch them alive if at all possible and feed them corn for a few days to clean them out real good before eating them. You just don't know whose garbage they've been into. After all, you wouldn't want to eat something that's been eating Aunt Edna's leftovers, would you?

You know, she's the one who brings that stuff that nobody ever touches to the family reunion. Hey, man, what IS that stuff? I think it's still alive! Possums are also notoriously hard to kill, and they, well, play possum if they feel threatened. That's why they're called possums! I remember hearing about someone who had a possum get in his garage one time.

He was real mad about something, and having a possum rooting around in his garage making a mess just made it worse, so he took after that thing with a shovel. The possum never had a chance. He did have to chop its head off to make sure it was dead; otherwise they just get up and walk off.

It was real strange; right after he beheaded the possum, lightning or something struck the garage, blowing out all the lightbulbs and giving him quite a shock. If you don't get the joke here, don't worry.

Please note that we're talking about the North American opossum here. There is a species of possum spelled without the leading "o" native to Australia which is endangered. It is strictly illegal to hunt, trap, or kill an Australian possum. However, this same species is reportedly a nuisance in New Zealand, so if you see one there. Of course, if you take this page seriously anyway That ought to get you started. Now, on to the recipes It is best to hit it over the head with a large object in a humane manner.

Boil the possum for 3 minutes to loosen the fur then skin and gut it. Marinate overnight in a mixture of meat marinade and soy sauce. Kentucky residents who have no fridge can use an ice chest and may use radiator coolant instead of soy sauce.

Cook over a barbecue, pit, 50 gallon drum or any other fire till you get the desired result. For added flavor, you can cook it over burning tires. Adult possums are all about scavenging. Newborn possums are the size of a honey bee. The taste of possum may vary depending on its diet.

If a possum eats nothing but human trash, then it will taste greasy and horrible. The meat will carry an unpleasant smell and might turn you off. But if you eat a possum that lives outside the city and incorporated lives, then it will taste good. Because these possums tend to eat fruits, bugs, and things from the nutritious wild. You can easily cook it with carrots and potatoes. Possum meat tends to have taste similarities to that of a squirrel and rabbit meat.

The taste is even comparable to gamey meat as it is from the wild. You can add your garnishes to make the dish flavourful. Before you cook your possum, you first need to clean and skin it. Proceed to remove the organs, head, and feet. You need to make another incision below the length of each leg. The fur and skin of the possum will come right off its body once it is warm enough. You will find a small layer of fat under its skin, which should be easy to remove.

You can get rid of the fats if you want to avoid the feeling of gaminess that you get from gamey meats. Once you are done skinning and cleaning your possum, you will require the given ingredients and steps. Step 1 — Place your possum meat into a pot with sufficient water to avoid burning.

Cover the pot with a good tight lid.
